I know that semantics is the study of language meaning because my mother was constantly telling me that my arguments were just that – using the preciseness of language to make a point. So, what ’s wrong with that? (I’m guessing she thought I twisted the meanings to my benefit, but that’s a story for another day.)

What I really want to discuss today is Semantic Search. Proponents suggest that the ideal search engine would be able to match your search queries to the precise context and return results within that context. And who wouldn’t want that?

Technology in this regard has improved greatly and there are many terrific engines. Here are a few to try:

Not a Wild Goose Chase

Duck, Duck, Go

We love this one, and not just because the name is cute. It returns results like nobody’s business. And it’s easily integrated into your Firefox toolbar.

Ein anderes großes.

Semanger

Another hit. Although the site is in German (you can translate the page at Free Translation if you need help) the results in English are right on. It also provides keyword suggestions if you want to hone in further. Nice.

Got a Question?

Lexxe

Sometimes, you just want an answer to a question? Right? Back in the day, Ask Jeeves attempted to make this a reality, but we haven’t seen anything that works as well as this semantic search tool. We asked Can you talk on a cell phone and drive in NY? And the top answer? “No.” Seriously. It said no. Of course, there are loads of links and pertinent answers and references, but how cool. You’re going to love this.
